The History of Ragdolls

The Ragdoll Cat has become one of the most popular cat breeds in the world. The beginning of Ragdolls started in Riverside California in the 1960’s by a lady named Ann Baker. Ann Baker was a breeder of Persian cats, mostly blacks, before she started working on Ragdolls. She started working with a non pedigree cat named Josephine. Josephine was a white long haired cat who belonged the Ann’s neighbor Mrs. Pennels. Like many cats in the area Josephine was half feral and she often produced kittens At one time Josephine was hit by a car, Ann’s neighbors who worked at the local university rescued her and nursed her back to health. During this time Josephine had to stay indoors and she became somewhat tame. When she had her next litter the kittens were born in the house where Ann first noticed them. The kittens were very relaxed and social. It is not clear why these kittens were so different. In any case Ann saw something so special in these kittens she decided to use them to create a new breed.

The first kitten from Josephine that Ann acquired was Buckwheat, a black female that looked like a Burmese. Ann was later given another daughter of Josephine, a bicolor she called Raggedy Ann Furgianna. The father of Furgianna was a mitted cat named Daddy Warbucks, s son of Josephine’s owned by Mrs. Pennels.

All these cats were offspring of Josephine's, but they all had different sires.

Ann was very impressed by the looks of Daddy Warbucks, who had the appearance of a Birman with a nose blaze and a white tip on his tail. It was this cat that Ann called the “father of the true Ragdoll look” ... and she borrowed him often for the Ragdoll breeding program.

These three cats are the foundation stock of Ragdolls, for Ann never had a chance to get anymore Josephine kittens. When Josephine had her next litter, the owner’s husband had Josephine and her kittens destroyed.

Ann Baker and Raggedy Ann Fugianna are pictured the right. Ann Baker died in 1997.

Breed Characteristics

Ragdolls truly deserve their name. They have a tendency to relax their muscles and go limp in your arms like a child's Ragdoll. They are friendly, sweet, loving, docile. Serene and gentle. Their personalities have made them addictive.

Ragdolls are people- oriented cats who love to be with humans and attach strongly to their owners. They will follow you from room to room. Be careful because you almost always have an occasion when you step on a tail. But don’t worry they forgive very easily.

Because they are very social you should always have at least two Ragdolls if you spend any length of time away from home.

Ragdolls are calm yet moderately active and like to play. With their easy going attitude they get along well with other animals and children. You should never let them out doors by themselves. They are very trusting. They think everyone is their friend.

Ragdolls are easily trained. They usually can learn the same tricks as dogs, like fetching toys rolling over and begging. Don’t forget these are only common qualities in Ragdolls.
